Crucial professional courses for Merchant Navy jobs

When it comes to Marine jobs there are quite a few career opportunities that one can look forward to. In fact, there are some professional courses as well that one can enrol for in order to have an established job in shipping later on.

One such course is the GP or the General Purpose Rating. Here the candidates are trained in both engine room and deck tasks. They are trained to work either in the deck or in the Engine department as per the requirement of the company. The task that one can do after this course, are related to Cargo handling, Seamanship, Maintenance work on the deck, Maintenance of the machinery and its operation.

What is a GP Course?

It is a 6 months residential pre sea training course which one can enrol for once they clear their class 10 examination. The course here is approved by the DG shipping, Government of India and helps one to start their career in Merchant Navy. As mentioned above, the course is designed to a combined study of engineering and deck subjects. This course covers all the aspects of a seafaring profession that are needed like physical drills, swimming, workshop training, mast climbing and rope climbing, fire fighting exercises, lifesaving appliance usage and others.

Once the pre sea training is completed, an external examination is conducted by the Board of Examination of Seafarers also known as BES under the D.G Shipping and the candidates who pass the examination are issues a discharge certificate which gives them the chance to work with an Indian or even an International shipping company.

In order to get into the GP course, there is no common entrance test but there are some institutes that conduct their own entrance examinations to select their own candidates.

Eligibility Criteria

  • One has to pass with an aggregate of 40 percent marks in 10th standard from any recognised board and a minimum 40 percent marks in English language.
  • One has to pass in a 2 yea ITI course from any Government approved institute with a minimum of 50 percent aggregate and a minimum of 40 percent in English in 10th.

Medical Standard

Candidates must be physically fit under the norms of Sea Service and DGS. There should be no eyesight issues and no colour blindness.

Career Opportunities

Once the 6 months course is completed and a certificate is issued, one can join the engineering or deck department as a trainee GP rating. From there, one can get promotions to higher posts. 

The GP rating course is conducted twice a year with the batches commencing from January and July every year.

How to go for the sponsorship?

For GP rating sponsorship, one will get an assurance letter from the organisation can they can work on their ship till the course is complete. While doing that, one can also get an opportunity to gain some sea serving experience and receive stipend during the training period. As many maritime institutes and colleges are tied up with leading shipping companies, it is easier to provide sponsorship. 

There is another course that one can pursue if they want to work in shipping companies. This course is known as the Diploma in Nautical Science or DNS.

What is a DNS course?

This is a one year residential diploma course leading to a 3 year B.Sc. Nautical Science after 18 months of sea service. This also leads to the 2nd Mate Foreign going Certificate of Competency also known as the CoC which is awarded by the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India. After doing this course, the cadets can become Navigating officers on board at merchant navy ships anywhere in this world.

The admission to DNS course is based on the merit list or the entrance exam. The IMU campuses are affiliated to colleges and institutes which provides admission after counselling and choosing students on the basis of a merit list. This list is prepared by the IMU based on an common entrance test conducted online and known as IMU- CET. A sponsorship from a shipping company is also considered to be mandatory to get admission in this course.

This particular course focuses on the basics of Mathematics, Physics, Information Technology and of course Nautical knowledge. The course is designed to cover all the major topics which are related to the Shipping industry and it also includes things like Ship Maintenance, Navigations and Cargo Operations. The candidates can learn both theoretical and practical aspects of Nautical technology when they are pursuing this course. Once the course is complete, the candidates can train on board and gain experience. After some relevant years of sea service, one can rise up in the professional ranks.

Eligibility Criteria

  • One has to pass 10 plus 2 with an average marks of 60 percent in Maths, Physics and Chemistry or they need to be a B.Sc. in any of this subject with an average of 55 percent till the final year.
  • There has to be 50 percent in English either in 10th or 12th.
  • The age limit is below 25 years.
  • It is mandatory to have a passport during the commencement of the course.

Medical Standard

Candidates need to be physically fit under DGS norms and the vision needs to be perfect. No colour blindness is preferred.

Career Opportunities

The students need to apply for CDC by the end of the course. Also, during the course proper attendance is needed to be maintained in order to start working as a trainee and then go high up the rank.

In order to get sponsorship in GP rating or other courses in Merchant Navy, it is very crucial for the candidate to have a complete information regarding the eligibility criteria of the shipping company where one is looking for to apply for the sponsorship. One also needs to be medically fit in order to be qualified to get the sponsorship and carry on with the course.
