Kedarkantha Trek: A Complete Guide


Kedarkantha trek is one of the most popular treks in Uttarakhand. It is located within the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttarkashi district, where a variety of beauty is found. The peak of the Kedarkantha trek is 12,500 ft. The scene from the Kedarkantha is so beautiful that can not be described in words. You have to experience it yourself.

The path of Kedarkantha trek goes through the middle of the dense forests, which makes this trek even more exciting, the kedarkantha gives a 360-degree view of the snow-capped mountains and forest. The campsite of the trek offers the best view of sunset which will become steeper and more difficult. But when you come closer to the upper Himalayas, the view will make you feel like you are on another planet.

How to reach Kedarkantha

By Air–  Jolly Grant Airport of Dehradun is the nearest airport to Kedarkantha. The distance of Sankri (Kedarkantha) from Dehradun airport is just 200 kms. From Dehradun, you can reach Sankri with the help of   Bus, Cab, and Shared Taxi. Dehradun airport is extremely well connected to major airports of India.

By Train– Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Dehradun railway stations are the nearest railway stations to Sankri (Kedarkantha). These railway stations are very well connected by rail to all the major cities of India. The nearest railway station is Dehradun Junction. You will get a direct bus from Dehradun to Sankri.

By Bus– There is an immediate bus which goes from Dehradun to Sankari village ( via Barkot- Purola- Netwar route).  This bus reaches Sankri (Kedarkantha)  at the proper time. It departs from Dehradun at 5:30 am and reaches at around 4:00 or 4:30 am.

Best time to visit Kedarkantha

The best time to do the Kedarkantha trek is from January to April, at this time we can enjoy this trek very well. Because at this time there is a lot of snow which was lying during winter, we get to see that snow between January to April. So this would be the best time to do the Kedarkantha trek.   • Kedarkantha  is at a very high altitude, due to which the temperature here becomes very low during the night and have some important things on the trek which must carry;
  • Warm clothes, like- sweater, warm socks, monkey cap, muffler
  • Hiking shoes, Slippers, Snow shoes, Torch, Sun glasses, Sunscreen lotion, Lip balm, Treking bag, Poly bag, Walking stick, Rain coat.
  • Camera, Extra battery, Power bank charger, Water bottle.
  • Medicine including; Headache, vomiting medicine, moov spray, stomach pain and volini spray, banded.
  • Umbrellas may also be needed in Monsoon.
  • Id proof, Photocopy for formality of permit.
  • Be sure to carry a good camera with you because  nowhere else will you get  a better opportunity to click pictures of snow-capped Himalayan peaks and lush green valleys.

  • Before starting the trek, check the weather.
  • Attempt to keep the load of your bag up to 10 to 12 kg.
  • If you are not experienced in trekking within the mountains, then you will  take an area guide with you.
  • Before starting the trek, make sure to get information about the rules related to Kedarkantha trek.
  • Before starting the trek, the trekking agency which is doing this trek, then first of all do not forget to take information about the itinerary.
  • Trekking during the monsoon season is generally avoided, especially for those who are new to trekking, as the region receives frequent rains which can lead to cloudbursts, landslides and roadblocks. So be a little extra careful during this point.
  • Do not choose this trek alone unless you are amid an experienced guide. Always trek in groups of more than two.
